The centerpiece of the Greenwich Old Timers Athletic Association’s mission to promote and support youth-oriented sports organizations and individuals is its scholarship program. Through 2009, the Old Timers association has awarded 75 scholarships to young Greenwich men and women who have attended colleges and universities throughout the country.
The Old Timers initiated the scholarship program in 1966, awarding a $500 scholarship, renewable each year for four years, to a graduating scholar-athlete in Greenwich. In later years, two high school graduates were awarded scholarships, and a third was added in 2009. The award itself has also grown, by $500 increments, to its current $2,000 annually for four years.
The scholarships were dedicated to the memory of George M. Weiss, an integral figure in the Old Timers’ formation and growth, following his death in 1972. The program was then re-dedicated to the memory of Old Timers founders Joe and Jim Branca following their deaths in 1994 and 1998, respectively.
Additionally, in 1997, the Old Timers association was selected as the recipient of the remaining funds of the Willard E. Hoyt Memorial, Inc., and the decision was made to perpetuate Mr. Hoyt’s name in the form of an annual one-year scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a Greenwich High School graduate who excelled in baseball at the school.
Following is a list of the recipients of these scholarship awards and the schools they attended or in which they are currently enrolled.
